Position Overview
AE Works is seeking a driven, forward thinking Engineering Managing Principal to lead and develop a highly skilled team of mechanical, electrical and plumbing/fire protection engineers. In this role, you'll be at the forefront of shaping our engineering practice, driving innovation across the firm. Your leadership will inspire and guide our talented engineering staff, ensuring they deliver exceptional results while fostering a culture of continuous improvement. Location: Arlington, VA with travel to client and project sites.
Responsibilities
Engineering Leadership & Staff Development
- Expand and enhance the engineering practice across the firm, providing support at both project and departmental levels.
- Serve as a mentor and leader, offering clear guidance, regular feedback, and direction to ensure high-quality outcomes from the engineering team.
- Collaborate with project team leads to effectively coordinate MEP services.
- Oversee and maintain quality control across all project phases involving engineering contributions.
Business Strategy & Client Relations
- Collaborate with the COO and firm leadership to develop and implement key business initiatives for engineering services and key markets.
- Act as the primary point of contact for clients and consultants regarding engineering services.
- Research and analyze potential clients, projects, and market trends to inform business strategies.
- Represent the firm at industry events and conferences, providing insights on market trends and opportunities.
- Participate in speaking engagements and presentations to showcase expertise and elevate the firm’s profile.
- Lead the preparation of fee proposals, support review and development of qualifications packages, and presentations to support business development efforts.
Qualifications
- Experience: A minimum of 15 years of leadership experience in an architectural or MEP engineering firm is required, with at least 5 years in a principal-level role focused on client relationship management and strategic leadership. Candidates should demonstrate a proven history of successfully designing and managing projects in healthcare, higher education, or government markets, showcasing expertise in delivering innovative and high-quality solutions. Sales experience, particularly in developing proposals, leading client presentations, and participating in business development interviews, is highly desirable. The ideal candidate will have a strong blend of technical proficiency, leadership acumen, and client engagement expertise to drive growth and operational excellence.
- Education: Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Architectural Engineering or Engineering from an ABET accredited university.
- Licensure: PE license required, with the ability to pursue additional state licenses as needed.
- Technical Skills: Skilled with using cloud based and mobile technology for collaboration.
- Attributes: Exceptional communication and listening skills, capable of managing multiple assignments simultaneously. Strong leadership and organizational abilities, along with a commitment to actively engage and contribute to our company culture.
