POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Director of Digital Practice leads AE Works’ firmwide digital strategy, advancing workflows, standards, and emerging technologies to elevate project delivery and innovation. Partnering with leadership and the CTO, this role drives the adoption of design technology, oversees BIM and computational design practices, and ensures seamless digital integration across all projects. The Director mentors staff, builds firmwide digital literacy, and represents AE Works as a thought leader in the AEC industry.
LOCATION:
Remote with quarterly travel to Pittsburgh, PA & Arlington, VA offices
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Strategic Leadership
- Lead digital practice strategy in partnership with firm leadership, aligning with business goals and project delivery needs.
- Shape multi-platform workflows to enhance design, documentation, and construction integration.
- Guide adoption of new tools and processes that drive firmwide innovation and competitiveness.
Technical Oversight
- Evaluate, pilot, and implement hardware, software, and emerging technologies in collaboration with IT and project teams.
- Establish standards for data-driven workflows, lifecycle BIM processes, and computational design.
- Assist with contract reviews of BIM focus technical language or procedures with internal contracts team.
Training & Mentorship
- Design and deliver training programs to build digital literacy across all disciplines.
- Foster a collaborative team mentality focused on research, innovation, and implementation across architecture and engineering staff.
- Mentor digital practice staff to support career growth and strengthen expertise within the team.
External Engagement
- Represent AE Works at industry conferences, professional associations, and client forums as a thought leader in BIM and digital innovation.
- Build connections with peers and technology partners to anticipate trends and keep the firm at the forefront of design technology.
QUALIFICATIONS:
What's Required:
- Professional degree in Architecture, Engineering, or a related design discipline
- 10+ years of experience in design technology, digital practice, or BIM leadership within the AEC industry
- Proven expertise with Autodesk Revit and related tools (e.g., Autodesk Construction Cloud)
- Demonstrated expertise in all phases of architecture and engineering design, with a passion for learning and adopting new technologies
- Experience developing and implementing BIM Execution Plans, standards, and digital workflows
- Strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills
- Track record of mentoring and developing staff in digital practices
- Experience with project contracts, including BIM-related technical requirements
What Puts You Ahead:
- Licensed Architect or Engineer
- Experience integrating computational design, data analytics, and automation into workflows
- Knowledge of environmental analysis tools, and design visualization tools.
- Familiarity with programming or scripting languages (Python, C#, Revit API)
- LEED, WELL, or other sustainability-related accreditation
