Job Summary: As the lead mechanical engineer for central plant design at AE Works, you will play a pivotal role in the design and implementation of central plant and thermal distribution projects, specifically campus-scale steam and chiller plants. You will be responsible for utilizing your expertise in steam and chiller plant systems to develop, design and optimize the design of these facilities, ensuring they meet the unique needs and standards of our clients, which include higher education, federal, research and healthcare organizations.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Central Plant Design: Lead and oversee the design and integration of both steam and chiller central plant systems, including both central plant equipment and distribution piping within the plant and campus-wide.  Our projects include both renovation of existing central plant facilities as well as new central plants.  Analysis capabilities to include overall heat and mass balance, energy efficiency optimization, equipment selection, and sizing of piping and ductwork.
  2. Subject Matter Expertise: Provide in-depth knowledge and technical leadership on central plant systems, including components, performance optimization, and maintenance best practices.  Our ideal candidate will have experience with utility master planning, life cycle cost analysis, energy modeling and hydraulic calculations.
  3. Client Collaboration: Work closely with clients to understand their specific needs and requirements. Develop custom central plant solutions that enhance energy efficiency, sustainability, and cost-effectiveness while meeting healthcare regulations.
  4. Technical Documentation: Lead the development of technical documentation, including system specifications, technical reports and narratives, and construction documents.
  5. Quality Assurance: Conduct thorough quality assurance checks and evaluations of both your work and the work the broader team to ensure the systems designed will perform efficiently, safely, and reliably, while also meeting client requirements.
  6. Continuous Improvement: Stay updated on the latest advancements in central plant technology and healthcare industry regulations. Propose and implement innovative solutions to enhance system performance and energy efficiency.
  7. Team Collaboration: Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams of engineers, architects, and project managers to ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 10 years experience in designing and implementing central plant systems.
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field. Master's degree preferred.
  • PE license required, with ability to pursue licensing via reciprocity in additional states.
  • Familiarity with Revit and other relevant design software.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work well in a team environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
